Hello and welcome to our weekend catch up. I am zipping in and out as I put this together on Friday, trying to get all my work done in time to watch the winter Olympics opening ceremony. Human achievement, inspiration, cooperation, and respect on full display for two weeks sounds pretty great right now. I’m embarrassed to admit this as a Canadian, but this is pretty much the only time I ever watch hockey.
Take care out there and see you next time :)

5 Things I’m Enjoying:
- Oomé smoked tofu! Specifically the maple soy one on a vegan BLT.
- I have been slowly breaking up with Amazon. It’s my goal to be totally done with it by the end of this month. I don’t shop with them, don’t use their web services/Audible/Kindle etc. But I do still watch some TV shows on Prime. Once I figure out how to get all my Bravo faves elsewhere and I remove all the old affiliate links from my recipes, I’m done with them for good!
- The way I teared up reading through these. Stories of kindness/people coming together to make the world less sh*tty is a real gift lately.
- I will develop myself in a positive manner!
- My Dog Tintin’s Trans-Atlantic Voyage on the Queen Mary 2
5 Questions:
- The whole wheat bread and bran muffins… are these the two recipes that have taken you the longest to test? And if not, what was?
The bran muffins definitely were! I kept trying to make them this whole other indulgent thing–double chocolate bran, mixed berry bran, bran streusel coffee cake, you name it! Once I embraced the idea of an old school, classic bran muffin, it came together A LOT faster. Usually when I don’t embrace the recipe/ingredient as it is (and try to turn it into something else), it takes a lot longer to work out. - Are you watching the Superbowl/making anything special?
I will definitely be watching Bad Bunny! I think we might be making pizza, Caesar salad, and I’ve had a real craving for cowboy caviar lately, so I’ll probably also make a batch of that to scoop with chips (and then eat the leftovers for lunch/snacks all week). - What other bakes are you working on?
Not really a bake, but sweets-adjacent: puffy and thick vegan whole wheat pancakes. Also: peanut butter cookies, a “back pocket” chocolate chip recipe (no room temp vegan butter or resting time + minimal ingredients), blondies, lemon loaf, corn muffins, tomato galette this summer, cake-y coconut cookies with icing, persimmon tea cake, and beet brownies. Some of these will be GF! - With the length of time in your new whole wheat bread recipe, why not try sourdough?
When I was breaking down this new recipe on Instagram, I mentioned that I’m too intimidated by sourdough making and haven’t tried it. Yes, the recipe takes time, but it is 95% inactive time. Also, I think using dry packaged yeast in a bread recipe is a bit more beginner-friendly. Lastly, up until now, all of the bread recipes on here have been no-knead, so I just want to keep the party going! - Do your dogs share a bed with you?
Mickie does! Cleo likes her own space in a dog bed right beside. On my non-gym mornings, Mickie will will pop out of her little bed around 5-6 (yes, a small dog bed on top of the human bed) and tuck herself right up next to me under the covers. I love it and apparently it might be good for my gut microbiome?

On breaking up with Amazon, you’re going to have to avoid a LOT of the internet if you’re trying to do a true boycott. Around 40% of its infrastructure relies on Amazon Web Services or sites using its services. A strict boycott is nearly impossible, unfortunately.
Hi Lana!
I know that AWS is quite pervasive–even my favourite Formula 1 team is sponsored by them, ugh. I mean boycott in the sense that I’m quitting any intentional Amazon purchases/affiliate links on my end (perhaps not a 100% true boycott). Just doing the best I can with the tools I have at my disposal.

I am soooo excited for the upcoming baking recipes! Really appreciate your thorough testing and simplicity. I am specifically craving a good vegan peanut butter cookie recipe. I have your bran muffins in the oven right now; I just bought a bag of the Flourist wheat bran. So excited! Cheers to Team Canada and happy watching.
Congrats on breaking up with Amazon!! Ones of the best things I ever did! (Don’t wanna give a dime to any more dictator- and genocide-supporting billionaires.) And thank you for the link to stories of kindness. We all need more reminders of the good and compassionate people out there, when the world and local news has become increasingly tragic. We all need to take care of each other. Love the list of your recipes today– can’t wait to try them. Thank you for all you do for us! And yes, I’m convinced that sleeping with our dogs is good for us, and for them! Sending hugs
I hear you concerning Amazon! Prime video is what I will have a challenge letting go of, too, but there are so many other wonderful platforms like Criterion Collection, I’ll be fine. The recent propaganda vanity project supported by Bezos was the final straw for me….. On a positive note!!! I was able to see the Venerable Monks pass through Richmond this past week! Pannakara’s dharma talks along their walk have been reminders for me that a simpler life it better.
Is the Atlantic article meant to be a gift/free link? It’s still prompting me to subscribe.
Hi Allie, are you clicking on the text that says “non-paywalled”? It should take you to an internet archive page that has screenshot the article.

D’oh. I didn’t realize that was a separate link. Thank you
No prob! I will make it more clear in the future :)

Good for you on your break up! I broke up with them a while back, too. I get my Bravo fix on Peacock, which I am sure has its issues as well but at least is not Amazon.
I love the idea of breaking up with Amazon. I definitely don’t use it as much as some people but it’s the only place I can get certain things like light spelt flour. Please, please include some matcha flavored baked goods!!!
Hooray for breaking up with Amazon! And for Saturday Sun! I always enjoy these posts and your recipes. Thank you!
I feel you on the bread making Laura – over the pandemic I felt like I perfected three low-effort bread recipes I was super happy with, and some well-meaning loved ones mistook that to mean I wanted to get super into breadmaking and bought me all kinds of books, tools, etc. that I never touched and ended up giving away. No need to mess with what works best for you!!
